One can ensure a balance between divergent and convergent thinking in the brainstorming process by clearly defining and separating the two phases. The divergent or generative phase should be a time for free-flowing ideas, where quantity is prioritized over quality. No idea is too outlandish or impractical. Once a sufficient number of ideas have been generated, the process should then shift to the convergent or selective phase. This is a time for critical thinking and evaluation, where the ideas generated in the divergent phase are scrutinized and the most practical and beneficial are selected. By clearly defining and separating these two phases, a balance can be maintained.
