The Kanban system helped Toyota compete with American car companies by increasing their productivity. It was designed to produce only what is needed, when it is needed and in the amount needed. This system was developed internally at Toyota due to their inability to hire new employees or acquire new equipment. It allowed them to visually track tasks and determine the next actions in a process workflow, thereby improving efficiency.
